International dialogue
Along with the entire region of Southeastern Europe, Serbia is facing a new challenge, most aptly referred to as The Process of European Integration. As a consequence, the Heinrich Boll Foundation is engaged in stimulating the forces that would assist this process as much as possible. Economic and social challenges are not the only challenges imposed by the European integrations. International dialogue in the Southeastern Europe region has been strongly influenced by the realities of the past two decades, a period marked by wars and conflicts that have changed demographic, economic, and political reality of this part of the Europe, which is now aiming at becoming a part of a much larger community.
With its 27 representative offices, The Heinrich Boll Foundation is present all across the globe. In the Southeastern European region we are present in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb. Through a network of our offices together with a network of our local partner organizations, we are striving to promote dialogue across borders. As a factory of “green ideas”, we stimulate new concepts, share knowledge and open dialogue on all subjects relevant to our work, both locally and globally: equal opportunities, promotion of democratic thinking, support to environmental policies and sustainable development.
1989 - twenty years later: the postcommunist countries and the EU-policy
Publication
January 20, 2010 - In the words of the Polish journalist and dissident, Adam Michnik, 1989 was Europe’s annus mirabilis. The peaceful revolution of that year was a miracle effected by the people in central and eastern Europe. Hardly any one (and certainly no western head of state or politician) had foreseen that a popular movement active in different countries would, in just a few months, topple socialist regimes and force the mighty Soviet Union to retreat behind the borders of Russia. EU policy toward the Western Balkans - Regional Perspective
Brochure
There is no doubt that the states of the Western Balkans belong to the European Union. However, their road to the EU is by no means an easy one. The entire Western Balkan region is not only encumbered by the maladies related to its communist past, but also by the problems the region has more recently experienced due to the horrors of war. Many of the ethnic tensions have not yet cooled down. more»
Religion, Politics and Gender Equality in Serbia
Project
Project Religion, Politics and Gender Equality (UNRISD)

This project raises two sets of questions:
1. How can religion and politics become intertwined? Are there distinct modes of insertion in different settings?
2. What are the social and political effects, especially from a gender perspective, of this blending of religion and politics? When is it likely to pose a danger to modern normative structures associated with gender equality and democracy?
Research is carried out in 11 countries – Chile, India, Iran, Israel, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Serbia, Turkey and the United States. All the reports are to be found on the web page of the Gunda Werner Institute:
